Abstract
Confined placental mosaicism is frequently observed in chromosome analysis of chorionic villus sampling. During January 1988 and December 1993, prenatal diagnosis by first-trimester chorionic villus sampling performed in 627 pregnancies.
Cytogenetic information was obtained by both direct cytotrophoblastic preparation and monolayer mesenchymal tissue culture. We observed 13 chromosomal mosaicisms of 627(2.1%) and most of them were monosomy and trisomy. Our results showed higher
figures
than other reports. In the clinical follow-up studies of the 13 pregnancies, one patient requested termination of pregnancy from the CVS result and further follow-up study was out of sight. Of the remaining 12 cases, nine delivered normal babies
and
three could not be followed. These results support that some chromosomal mosaicisms within chorion are confined the trophectoderm and due to the instability of chorionic villus cell and culture condition. Consequently, the etiology of
pseudomosaicism
should be discussed in relation to the early development of placenta and culture methods. Although all cases proved to be pseudomosaicism in our study, it can not be excluded that true mosaicism exist. Therefore, the confirmatory testing fo fetal
blood
or amniotic fluid in the cases that mosaicism is detected in chorionic villi must be considered.
